Alleviating Test Anxiety • Inclusive Education Journal Club

Achievement gaps in STEM courses negatively affect retention and are experienced disproportionately by low-income, female, and underrepresented minority students. For example, women in many STEM classrooms underperform compared with men, despite being the numerical majority. One hypothesis attributes this gender disparity to increased physiological stress and anxiety during tests. Dr. Susana Wadgymar (BIO) will host a discussion of an empirical investigation examining how techniques for alleviating test anxiety can influence self-perceived anxiety, exam performance, and gender gaps in exam scores in introductory STEM courses.
