Despite its disciplinary importance\, integration of computation into physics education remains a challenge and has tended to be constructed narrowly as a route to solving physics problems. Moreover\, little attention has been paid to who is doing computation vis a vis marginalization\, nor to the masculinized culture around contemporary computing. This talk centralizes the idea of “Queering” computation by proposing an educational environment that centralizes inquiry\, agency and scientific practices. Central to the design is Making\, the creation of shared physical and digital artifacts intended to promote students’ creativity and self-expression alongside doing physics. \nIn this interactive talk\, Dr. Tim Atherton will introduce the design of our environment\, present evidence from our explorations of four years of implementation at Tufts University. Participants will try elements of the activity and identify ways that they could adapt and incorporate this into their own environment. The workshop will conclude with data on how Queer people have engaged in this environment and prospects for future refinement. Davidson and Christina Katopodis from this site describes Lessons from Plants:\n“This gorgeous book by microbiologist Dr. Beronda L. Montgomery is as beautiful to read as it is to hold—in your hands\, in your heart. We can’t stop thinking about Montgomery’s key lesson: if you have a plant that is struggling\, you figure out what environmental changes it needs to thrive—more or less water or sunlight\, better soil. When people fail to flourish\, we’re quick to blame the individual. As an African American woman\, Montgomery makes us think about society and how we approach problems (do we compete or do we build a collaborative effort for a holistic solution?). Humans have much to discover from our photosynthesizing world: how plants learn—from their own kin\, their friends\, and their foes—and Montgomery helps us to understand the nature (literally) of teaching and learning.” \nAdditional writing from Dr. Montgomery: \nMontgomery (2020) Lessons from microbes:  What can we learn about equity from unculturable bacteria?\nMolecular Biology and Physiology. 4: e01046-20.  https://journals.asm.org/doi/epub/10.1128/mSphere.01046-20  \nMontgomery (2021) My most memorable mentors? Instead\, a strengths-based perspective of neurodiversity will presented that may be integrated within STEM education in particular\, as well as in higher education overall\, as we present our vision for a transformative education system that moves beyond mere accommodation of learning differences and empowers all students to leverage their unique strengths. \nRefreshments served. \nAn event summary can be viewed here.
