Adding an Anti-oppression Statement to Your Syllabus: Why and How • FIRST Inclusive Education Workshop
January 15 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
It is impossible to create an equitable learning environment without a unanimous commitment to understanding how systems of oppression affect each one of us and to confronting these oppressive behaviors. An anti-oppression statement establishes on day one that every student is expected to do just that. Dr. Naima Starkloff (BIO) and Haleena Phillips ’21 (FIRST Action Team) will highlight the importance of having an anti-oppression statement in your syllabus for both students from underrepresented groups as well as from majority groups. They will discuss different approaches to anti-oppression statements and how to actively utilize them in the classroom.
