Faculty Mindset & Student Success • Journal Club & Lunch

Dr. Debbie Thurtle-Schmidt (BIO) hosts a journal club examining the research article “STEM faculty who believe ability is fixed have larger racial achievement gaps and inspire less student motivation in their classes” published in Science Advances by Canning et al. (2019). This large-scale study found that all college students performed better when learning from professors with growth mindsets (believing that intelligence is not a fixed trait but can be developed), a result that was strongest for students from underrepresented groups.
